Antares Point Visitor Center & Gift Shop is along the longest continuous curve on a U. S. Hwy (approx. 2 miles) and offers fantastic views into the Arizona desert.
Historically, this building was the Ranchero Motel. In 1965 it included a restaurant, bar, Shell gas station, and plenty of rooms for weary travelers to spend the night. While it no longer functions as a motel, the structure still stands today as Antares Point, with its intricate triangular sign, steep roof, and kitschy roadside attraction: Giganticus Headicus.
This 14-foot-tall green tiki head was created by local artist Gregg Arnold in 2004 out of cement, chicken wire, and styrofoam.
In addition to Giganticus Headicus, Antares Point is home to many unique pieces of Arnold's art, including his newer piece The Guardian of Route 66. Unveiled in 2021, this 16-foot-tall statue depicts a woman waving the American flag and holding up a Route 66 shield, paying tribute to the Mother Road itself.
Antares Point has limited hours, and is open 10am - 3pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. But it is always worth a stop check out the unique artwork all on the property even if the gift shop is closed.
